Colorectal Cancer Screening Test (FIT)

We provide fecal immunochemical tests (FIT) for early detection of colorectal cancer in asymptomatic individuals. Early detection identifies the disease when treatment is most effective. Screening can also detect polyps – abnormal cell growths in the colon. Polyps are not cancerous but may develop into cancer over time. Removing polyps reduces cancer risk.

Regular colorectal cancer screening reduces mortality from the disease.

Who Needs This Test?

We recommend FIT home testing for all adults aged 50+, regardless of gender.

This test is also recommended for individuals with a family history of colorectal cancer.

About Colorectal Cancer

Also known as colon, rectal, or colorectal cancer, it occurs when colon cells grow abnormally, forming polyps. Risk factors include:

  • Age (80% of cases occur in people over 60)
  • Physical inactivity
  • Obesity
  • Diets high in red/processed meat and low in fiber
  • Smoking & alcohol use
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s/ulcerative colitis)
  • Family history of colorectal cancer

The FIT Screening Process

This at-home stool test detects hidden (occult) blood invisible to the eye. Blood may indicate polyps or cancer, though not always. Most people receive normal results and require no further tests.

 Abnormal FIT Result?
You’ll be referred for a colonoscopy (an internal exam using a flexible camera-equipped tube). Polyps found during the procedure can often be painlessly removed and checked for cancer.

Remember:

  • Most FIT users won’t need a colonoscopy.
  • No screening is 100% effective; report symptoms even with normal results.

How to Use the FIT Kit

A simple at-home process:

  1. Collect a small stool sample.
  2. Follow the included instructions.
  3. Return the kit or read results (varies by test).
Takes minutes to complete – an easy early-detection tool.
